When I heard
the Glam Slam Metal Jam was coming to town, my first reaction
was laughter. Washed up pretty boys from the eighties, milking
thirty something's for money in exchange for some nostalgia. The
bands playing were Warrant, Quiet Riot, Enuff Z Nuff, and Poison
headlining the show.
Ok I admit
it; I liked a couple of Poison songs. Talk Dirty To Me has good
lyrics, and I Want Action is pretty good too. I personally leaned
towards the heavier stuff back then, but at the height of their
careers, they were everywhere. That may have been the coolest
thing about them. They were men in make up and in your face! The
opportunity arose to obtain front row tickets for free, so I figured
what the hell. I wanted to see what the scene was like.
Two hours before
the show, I ventured into the parking lot to scope out the people
attending this glam affair. Most of the people were old school rock
n rollers drinking buds and soaking up the sun. There were also
young ones with spiky hair, sporting their latest piercing. The
general mood was mellow so I snapped some pics and retreated back
to the air-conditioning until it was time for the show. I brought
along a close pal who was equally as curious about the scene. We
decided that alcohol would be necessary before the show. We slugged
a few back in the parking lot before going in. Now we were ready
for the glam slam experience!
Once we were
seated, we noticed many mullets in the crowd. My girlfriend noted
that we needed more alcohol. I agreed. We ran late getting to
the show so we missed Quiet Riot and Enuff Z Nuff .We caught most
of Warrant's set, and believe me we didn't miss much. Sorry guys,
the music was a poor version of its former self, and Jani Lane
wasn't looking to pretty. He decided to come into the crowd and
get close up while singing a slow one and I laughed my ass off
the whole time.
In between
sets, we decided to head out to the smoking area and talk to a
few people about the show. The majority of people I spoke with
felt that these bands still had a valid place in the music world
of today. They all agreed that even though they are perceived
as Pretty Boys, the musicians were talented and the music still
rocked. There were quite a few Quiet Riot fans that came to see
them specifically, but also liked the other bands as well.
We headed
back in and Poison came on. Their stage setup was pretty cool.
The stage had flames shooting out on both sides and a huge Poison
banner across the stage.
Brett came out wearing a fluffy white feather jacket. He tore
it off and then all you could hear were different levels of girls
screaming Brett!! He actually looked pretty decent. I was impressed
with his physical appearance. Yep - he can still bone the groupies!
There were a couple of newer songs added to the mix, but for the
most part they played the songs that made them MTV favorites.
Every Rose had Its Thorn was a sleeper. Sappy ballads aren't my
style but once again the girls loved Brett. I must give credit
where credit is due. CC's solo was impressive. His guitar style
has always been definitive. Prior to this concert I watched "Behind
The Scenes" about Poison. Apparently CC's drug induced lifestyle
got the best of him and they kicked him out of the band. Brett
said the band just wasn't the same after CC left. Their album
with a new guitarist didn't work out. CC eventually cleaned up
his act, and was asked back into the band. Brett boasted at the
concert that he was glad to have him back. What a pal.
They finished
the show with Talk Dirty To Me. This definitely was the highlight
of the evening. Brett and the boys put their best effort to this
tune and it showed. Brett looked good telling me to talk dirty
to him! I walked away from this concert having had a pretty good
time. One thing I liked about it was that it was laid back. It
was mainly a bunch of rockers having as Brett calls it "nothing
but a good time".
I don't know if these bands will return to the scene, but they
are still rocking out and ya can't argue with that.
